Hack the front end code and try to find the right balance of "get it done now" and "get it done right". I make the experience of the user as smooth and pleasurable as possible.
Consequently, I don't have a lot of free time so I'll add to this later...
Worked with some of the best designers and developers I've ever worked with to create a platform focused on delivering the best original web series to viewers.
Where possible, all CSS (no JS) solutions were used to create complex user interactions. The best examples of this are on the show posters and episode thumbnails (see videos).
Worked with Goldbely's talented co-founder, Vanessa Torrivilla, on an interactive experience designed to give users an sneak peek at the upcoming site.
Goldbely is a curated marketplace of outlandishly delicious, incredible, edible gourmet gifts.
For this project I used @Prinzhorn's parallax scrolling library Skrollr. (It's great!)

The beautiful main site is now live, but you can still see the landing page here: goldbely.com/landing
An interactive version of Emma Lazarus's "The New Colossus", which appears on the base of the Statue of Liberty.
The annotations are written by Esther Schor, author of the biography, Emma Lazarus. Designed by the wonderful Joshua Hester with art direction from Len Small of Nextbook Press.
All JavaScript and jQuery is of my own creation unless otherwise noted with alterations to the HTML and CSS.

"an entertaining feat of multimedia craftsmanship" - Habitus Mag
Collaborated with designer to create a digital “brochure.” Emphasis on a shared, but targeted, experience for both desktop and tablet users. Created all HTML and CSS by hand with a blend of my own JavaScript and jQuery plugins.
Worked with client to design site from concept to production. Created new logo based on existing drawings. Created all client side HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for speed and accessibility.
Coded all client side HTML, CSS, and JS along with homepage flash component. Had input for site redesign from concept to production.
Designed and built in 24 hours. Simple Google Map integration.
Coded emails with HTML and CSS so they avoid the largest number of spam filters and display correctly in the majority of email clients.
Many people assume coding emails is the same as coding a website. Unfortunately this is not completely true as divs are largely unrecognized by many emails clients. Tables must be used.
Concepted backend search/cache system with Senior Backend Developer and build out all HTML and jQuery. Reproduced most art work for web and designed suggestion box.
This site was completely built in two weeks and was probably the most high-pressure fun I’ve had working on a project.
This site is, unfortunately, no longer live.
Built out dynamic flash home page that pulls in information from it’s static HTML counterpart. The background video is randomly selected.
Note: The fish does not actively follow the mouse. That is just silly.
Enhanced site with dynamic, reusable flash modules – quote scroller and image slideshow.
Prototyped and built animations for World View.
Online artist’s portfolio designed to showcase the artist’s work.
Older version of my online portfolio.
Joel Gillman, born in Milwaukee, WI; moved to Madison, WI; then Minneapolis, MN and currently resides in Manhattan, NY. Clearly he is afraid to live in a city that does not start with M.
In 2008 he landed an awesome BFA in Interactive Media from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Promptly starting as a nerdy designer gave him unique perspective when he surrendered to front-end/UI development.
Pragmatic, personable and facetious, he is a delight to work with (if I may be so bold).

Over the first year I completely rewrote 90%+ of the front end code and JavaScript. As a co-founder I've done a bit of everything and worn nearly every hat. From managing user accounts on servers, to running social media campaigns, optimising SEO, fund raising a seed round, and so on.
